Former Premier League referee and PGMOL referees observer Rodger Gifford was sacked after making a racist comment to a black official at an FA Cup match in December. Gifford told the official he would have to smile in the dark to be seen, leading to his dismissal and a five-month suspension by the Football Association for an "aggravated breach of misconduct." Despite denying the charge and claiming it was a light-hearted comment, Gifford was found guilty of making inappropriate racial remarks, resulting in his suspension from all football-related activities for five months, a £400 fine, and mandatory education.
