On June 23, 2024, Philippine President Marcos stated that Manila will not go to war with Beijing over the South China Sea dispute. This comes after a recent altercation near Second Thomas Shoal involving Philippine Navy soldiers and Chinese coast guard where Filipino personnel were injured. President Marcos emphasized the Philippines' commitment to peacefully resolving disputes, commended the military's restraint, and asserted Manila will not yield to any foreign pressure. The US condemned China's actions, but Manila opted not to invoke the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, stating China's actions, while escalatory, did not constitute an 'armed attack'.
