Romeo Brawner Jr., the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, stated that if the Philippine military is attacked by Chinese coast guard in the disputed South China Sea, they will defend themselves with 'equal force'. Following a recent incident where Philippine Navy personnel were intercepted by Chinese coast guard and weapons were used, including machetes and spears, Brawner demanded compensation and the return of confiscated weapons from China. The two countries engaged in bilateral discussions on the South China Sea situation with strong protests from the Philippine side.
