The Philippines criticized China's demand for prior notification on medical evacuation after a sick soldier stranded on a Philippine naval vessel at Ren'ai Shoal in the South China Sea was harassed and obstructed by Chinese maritime forces. Despite China's interference, the Philippines successfully transported the patient for treatment with the assistance of the Philippine Coast Guard. The Philippines reiterated its sovereignty in the area, while China's claim over much of the region is disputed by multiple countries including the Philippines and Vietnam. The Hague's Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled in 2016 that China's historical claims lacked legal basis and violated the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, a decision China refuses to recognize.
