A recent conflict in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines has not yet compelled Manila to invoke the Philippines-US Mutual Defense Treaty, according to a statement by the Chief of the Presidential Palace in the Philippines. Despite the clash where Chinese coast guard personnel wielded weapons and rammed Philippine naval vessels, the official clarified that the conflict has not activated the treaty. The treaty states that in the event of an armed attack on either party's territory, political independence, or security in the Pacific region, consultations should take place between the foreign ministers or deputies of the two countries.
