Italian photographer Diego Marinelli captured an elderly butcher in Italy's countryside during a pig slaughter. The photo won the first prize in the European region of the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year competition, known as the 'Oscars' of food photography. The meticulous and solemn attitude of the old butcher resembled a serious ritual, prompting modern reflections on our relationship with animals and food. The image evokes a traditional sense of reverence towards animals and food that the photographer hopes will make people reconsider the changes in the human-food relationship over the past 70 years. Other award-winning works include rice farmers from Thailand, a mother and daughter selling sweets to support their family in Bangladesh, a Cuban government-owned food store facing high demand due to subsidized prices, and a banana seller in India's Pondicherry. The competition is sponsored by Australian Pink Lady® apples.
