According to a report by The People's Daily on June 28, 2024, planting trees is beneficial for carbon reduction, landscape improvement, and soil conservation. Despite recent concerns raised by various sectors regarding tree species, the Environmental Ministry clarified that there is no official announcement prohibiting the planting of specific tree species. Trees can help improve air quality by trapping suspended particles and other air pollutants. However, some tree species may emit isoprene, a precursor to ozone, making the selection of tree species a multi-faceted consideration. The Environmental Ministry, in collaboration with research teams from a university, has collected numerous domestic and foreign studies to propose research findings. With Taiwan's success in reducing air pollution, the focus has shifted to further reducing pollutants, including those from biological sources, to continue enhancing air quality. The Ministry will convene with the Agriculture Department, Forestry and Natural Conservation Administration, Forestry Research Institute, and academia to discuss suitable tree species for Taiwan's land and environment, providing a list of tree species with positive benefits such as carbon reduction, pollution prevention, and landscape improvement to address public concerns and planting challenges.
