On June 26, 2024, the NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM) confirmed on social media that the Portuguese Navy's Tridente-class submarine, NRP Arpão, completed the first-ever voyage under the Arctic ice sheet for a Portuguese diesel-electric submarine. The submarine participated in NATO's 'Operation Bright Shield' in the North Sea, monitoring surface and underwater activities to protect alliance assets, before beginning the 'Arctic 2024' mission on April 28. With support from the Royal Danish Navy, the submarine navigated through Greenland's waters and ice, followed by a 4-day underwater journey with assistance from the US and Canada. The successful completion of this rare mission showcased the exceptional skills of Portuguese sailors and the cooperation within the NATO alliance.
