Pregnant Woman in Mainland China Infected with Listeria after Drinking Unrefrigerated Milk

Reported about 1 year ago

A 36-year-old pregnant woman in Leqing, Zhejiang, Mainland China, unknowingly consumed unrefrigerated milk from her fridge which led to a Listeria infection, resulting in sepsis, premature birth, and septic shock in her fetus. Despite initial treatment, her newborn baby displayed symptoms of septic shock shortly after birth. Listeria bacteria can survive and grow even in refrigerated conditions, with over five-day-old refrigerated ready-to-eat foods posing a high risk of Listeria contamination. The doctor highlighted the importance of hand hygiene, clean kitchen utensils, and thorough cooking to prevent Listeria infections with severe consequences, especially for pregnant women and newborns.
