Premier Orders Interdepartmental Discussion to Strengthen Fire Safety After Vulnerabilities Found in Su Jun-bin's Proposal for Hazardous Material Storage

Reported 7 months ago

Taoyuan Deputy Mayor Su Jun-bin attended an Executive Yuan meeting on June 13th, 2024, and raised concerns regarding amendments to certain articles of the Fire Services Act proposed by the Ministry of the Interior, suggesting that warehouses storing hazardous materials outside of factory annexes only need to be recorded without proactive reporting, creating a fire safety loophole. Premier Cho Rong-tae agreed with Su's remarks and instructed officials to convene representatives from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, and Ministry of the Environment for further discussion. Su emphasized the high-risk nature of storage facilities for hazardous materials, highlighting that over 60% of fires in the past year occurred in locations not subject to required reporting of hazardous material storage. Despite concerns, the proposed amendments to the Fire Services Act did not include provisions addressing this issue during the meeting.
