President Lai Ching-te officially appointed lawyer Hong Wei-sheng on the morning of June 28, 2024, to apply for constitutional interpretation and temporary disposition. Amidst the controversy of Parliament Powers Reform, President Lai Ching-te opposes the expansion of parliamentary powers and has now formally requested a constitutional interpretation and temporary disposition, stating opposition until the promulgation of the law. This action marks the first instance of a sitting president requesting constitutional interpretation under the new system of grand justices, differing from former presidents who have also sought such interpretations. President Lai, along with the DPP Legislative Yuan Caucus, the Executive Yuan, and the Control Yuan, have all expressed concerns about the constitutionality of the Parliament Powers Reform. The matter has been expedited to the Constitutional Court for review, with further details still pending.
