President Lai Ching-te's first month in office has seen no honeymoon period domestically, with a focus on national defense and diplomacy amid recent military exercises by the CCP around Taiwan and a PLA ship captain crossing the mouth of the Tamsui River. Vice President Xiao Meiqin emphasized that democratic values are deeply rooted in Taiwanese lives, and Taiwan must enhance defense to protect the cherished freedom of its society as long as the People's Republic of China continues to pose threats. Xiao also highlighted the need for Taiwan to not take freedom and peace for granted, pointing out the challenges from authoritarian regimes expanding their influence and posing serious threats.
