President Lai Ching-te to Initiate Constitutional Interpretation and Provisional Measures: Parliament Should Reform But Not Expand Powers

President Lai Ching-te held his first press conference in the Presidential Office today since taking office on June 24, 2024, announcing plans to request a constitutional interpretation and provisional measures from the Constitutional Court in response to the rejection by the Legislative Yuan of the Executive Yuan's proposal for revising parliamentary powers. Emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional principles, President Lai stated that while parliament should undergo reforms, it should not be granted unchecked authority. He highlighted that the core spirit of a liberal democratic constitutional system lies in the separation of powers, checks and balances, and protection of human rights.
