President Lai: International Community Should Not Allow China to Arbitrarily Draw Red Lines

Reported about 1 year ago

President Lai Ching-te emphasized Taiwan's responsible handling of cross-strait relations and commitment to maintaining regional stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific during a meeting with the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China. He also urged the international community to prevent China from drawing red lines arbitrarily. The National Security Council Secretary-General pointed out that China has weaponized domestic legislation in recent years as a means of authoritarian expansion. The US State Department condemned China's punishment of 'pro-independence' individuals, emphasizing that threats and legal warfare cannot resolve cross-strait disputes peacefully. China's Foreign Ministry strongly opposed and criticized the US's remarks, urging adherence to the 'One China Principle' and non-support for Taiwanese independence commitments. Meanwhile, Chinese coast guard ships continued to intrude into Taiwanese waters, with four vessels approaching Kinmen within five nautical miles. Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration promptly dispatched three patrol boats to drive away the Chinese vessels.
