On June 28, 2024, President Lai Qingde visited the new recruits training at the Successful Ridge for the first time after Taiwan reinstituted one-year compulsory military service. President Lai encouraged the new recruits, emphasizing their training and efforts were to safeguard national security and protect the country's achievements. President Lai, accompanied by Defense Minister Gu Lixiong and Army Commander Zhong Shuming, observed the new recruits' close combat training, living quarters, and interacted with them during a meal, asking about their readiness and ability to withstand the training intensity, to which the recruits responded positively. President Lai praised the improvements in military facilities and training programs, reiterating the importance of their efforts for peace, stability in the Taiwan Strait, and national security.
