In an interview with Time magazine, President Tsai Ing-wen discussed the statement in her inauguration speech that 'the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China do not subordinate to each other' and emphasized that it was not provocative, as previous presidents Ma Ying-jeou and Tsai had also mentioned the concept. However, the Blue Camp immediately criticized President Tsai for packaging her own 'new two-nation theory' through this and accused her of deceiving foreign media who do not understand Chinese. The Nationalist Party (KMT) also emphasized the importance of increasing exchanges between both sides amidst the rising tensions between Taiwan and China. Additionally, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je stressed the need to focus on the practical realities rather than getting hung up on semantics, with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) reiterating President Tsai's commitment to sovereignty while offering goodwill gestures.
