On June 21, 2024, the Kuomintang Caucus and the People's Party Caucus rejected the appeal motion of the Executive Yuan on amendments to certain articles of the Legislative Yuan's exercise of powers law and the Criminal Code, due to their numerical advantage. The Presidential Office spokesperson, Kuo Ya-hui, stated that President Lai Ching-te will carefully evaluate whether to apply for constitutional interpretation. Following the vote, the Executive Yuan and the DPP Caucus in the Legislative Yuan both indicated they will file for constitutional interpretation, which the Presidential Office respects. Lai Ching-te, as a guardian of democratic constitutionalism, will consider the national development and democratic values when deliberating on controversial legal amendments, to safeguard people's rights.
