Exclusive report by reporter Shih-yi Zhang on June 30, 2024, 4:26 am. Taipei City Police Criminal Police Squad recently uncovered a habitual thief, Huang, involved in multiple cases of credit card theft. Huang used a dating app on his phone to invite online acquaintances to high-end hotels, rental suites, or business trips for chats and dates. While the victims were distracted, he stole their wallets containing credit cards or SIM cards, then used the stolen cards for accommodation, fine dining, and purchasing game points. Huang, who was unemployed due to internet gambling addiction and drug habits, lured victims by posing as a frequent traveler staying in luxury hotels through his muscular photos on the app. He targeted over 50 victims, accumulating over NT$800,000 in illegal gains. Huang evaded the police by moving from Taipei to Kaohsiung, but was eventually arrested with evidence of drugs, stolen documents, and credit cards. The police advised the public to be cautious of online acquaintances, keep valuables close, and report suspicious activities or theft immediately to ensure property safety.
