Dr. Hong Yi-Qi from the Department of Orthopedics at Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taitung discussed osteoporosis, where bone density peaks around age 30 and then decreases with age, leading to osteoporosis if bone loss exceeds bone regeneration. Osteoporosis is a major global epidemic, affecting one in three women over 50, with risk factors including aging, menopause, smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise, family history, inadequate calcium intake, and certain medications. Treatment aims to reduce fractures and includes medications to suppress bone loss or promote new bone formation. Lifestyle adjustments and adequate calcium intake are also crucial in combating osteoporosis.
