Proposed Amendment to Raise Recall Threshold in the Voting Rights Law by Next Week: Xu Yuzhen: Recall Becoming a Retaliation Tool for Those who Can't Afford to Lose

Reported 12 months ago

Reported by Chen Yijie in Taipei on June 29, 2024, Nationalist Party legislator Xu Yuzhen stated that the current low recall threshold and loose recall petition regulations have led to negative consequences within the recall system. Xu emphasized the need to raise the recall threshold to prevent recalls from becoming a tool for political revenge and urged for stricter regulations. She proposed amendments to the Voting Rights Law to ensure recalls are used as a serious procedure for relief, rather than a reckless act. The amendments will be reviewed next week in the Legislative Yuan. The current recall system's low threshold and loose petition rules have allowed recalls to become a tool for retaliation by those who can't afford to lose, potentially undermining the democratic process.
