US states and cities have added around 65,000 jobs recently, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, in contrast to a declining private-sector market. Boosted by federal pandemic aid, public sector hiring accounted for nearly a third of US non-farm payroll growth in June. Although localities have increased their workforce since 2022, economists believe that more hiring is needed to meet expanding needs and population growth. With the eventual reduction of federal aid, local job gains may decrease over the next year.
