On June 14, 2024, Russian President Putin stated that he would 'immediately order' a ceasefire in Ukraine if Kyiv withdraws troops from the four Ukrainian regions merged with Russia in 2022 and abandons plans to join NATO. Ukraine dismissed Putin's ceasefire conditions as 'absurd,' accusing him of misleading the world powers and undermining genuine peace efforts. Putin's demands also include keeping Ukraine non-nuclear, restricting Ukrainian military forces, and protecting the interests of Russian-speaking population in Ukraine, as well as requiring Western countries to lift all sanctions on Russia.
