On June 13, 2024, Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council Qiu Chuizheng expressed his disapproval of local government participation in the 16th Strait Forum in Xiamen the next day, as Taiwan's China Affairs Office claims 7,000 Taiwanese will attend. Qiu noted no significant increase in cross-strait traffic, indicating fewer participants compared to previous years, and urged adherence to cross-strait norms, social perceptions, and international interests. Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan is among those slated to attend the forum.
