Rare 2.2-Meter 'Hoodwinker Sunfish' Washes Up on US Coast, Originally Thought to Only Live in Southern Hemisphere

Reported about 1 year ago

A rare large fish that was believed to only inhabit temperate waters in the Southern Hemisphere was found washed up on the beach in the US state of Oregon, attracting a large number of onlookers. The 7.3-foot (2.2-meter) long hoodwinker sunfish appeared on Gearhart beach and has remained there for several days, possibly due to environmental abnormalities or ecological issues. Researchers are intrigued by its presence in an unusual location and it has caused a sensation on social media, identified as a hoodwinker sunfish by scientist Marianne Nyegaard from New Zealand, who previously studied the species and confirmed this to be the largest specimen ever recorded.
