A rare $20 'double eagle' gold coin minted in 1870 sold for $1.44 million at an auction in Costa Mesa, California, attracting keen interest from collectors. Only 3,789 coins were minted, with an estimated 40 to 50 remaining. The coin, noted for its superior grade, was last sold in 1986 for $23,100. Despite its staggering sale price, it fell short of expectations to surpass $2 million.
