Rare and Endangered Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake Found in Ohio: Key Information

Reported 6 months ago

A rare and endangered eastern massasauga rattlesnake was recently discovered in Ohio during the Ohio Division of Wildlife's annual snake survey. Considered one of the three venomous snakes native to Ohio, this snake is rare in the state and mainly found in a few select locations. The snake, also known as the 'swamp rattler' and 'black snapper,' is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act due to habitat loss. Identified by its small size, distinctive coloring, and restricted range, encountering this snake in the wild is uncommon. If spotted, observers are advised to maintain a safe distance and report sightings for research purposes.
