Reforestation to Increase Carbon Sequestration, Estimated to Reduce 2 Thousand Tons of Carbon Annually

Reported 8 months ago

On June 20, 2024, at 4:10 pm, Minister of the Interior Liu Shi-fang stated that national parks, wetlands, and coastlines are crucial natural carbon sink areas in Taiwan, acting as important blue carbon sources and restoration bases for the 2050 net-zero transition. The Ministry of the Interior plans to enhance national park carbon sequestration by planting trees in areas affected by invasive species, degraded habitats, abandoned farmlands, and sandbars, estimating a yearly reduction of 1,981.3 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. By actively promoting a national park net-zero emission strategy, the forest carbon sequestration and blue carbon storage are projected to remove approximately 2,053.7 thousand tons and 340 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, respectively.
