Retired Air Force Colonel Convicted as Spy! Sentenced to Record 20-Year Prison Term after 3 Trials

On June 14, 2024, the Supreme Court sentenced retired Air Force Colonel Liu Shengshu to a 20-year prison term for espionage, setting a record for the longest sentence in a spy case. Liu was accused of being recruited by Chinese intelligence, forming a spy network in Taiwan, and found guilty of violating national security laws. Other current and former military officers involved in the case were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 6 months to 19 years and 6 months. Liu and his accomplices, a retired couple both convicted, helped gather classified military documents for China, profiting over 16 million NTD over 8 years. After a lengthy legal process, the High Court upheld Liu's 20-year sentence while his accomplices received 19 years and 6 months each.
