On June 26, 2024, the biennial Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) is set to begin on June 27 in Hawaii and surrounding areas until August 2. One of the key focuses of this military exercise, reported by Voice of America (VOA), is the live-fire sinking of a 40,000-ton target vessel. Analysts suggest this could be US and allies preparing for a Chinese mainland amphibious assault ship targeting Taiwan. The exercise features participation from 29 countries, with 40 surface ships, three submarines, 14 army units from 14 countries, over 150 aircraft, and more than 25,000 personnel, making it the world's largest multinational maritime exercise. This year's highlight is the 'SINKEX' operation targeting a retired 40,000-ton USS Tarawa amphibious assault ship, resembling a quasi-aircraft carrier, in response to China's amphibious ship developments, potentially for use in the Taiwan Strait conflict.
