Yahoo News reported on June 25, 2024, that the Biden administration is investigating China's three major telecom companies amid fears that they might access data of American citizens through their cloud and network business operations in the US. The investigation by the US Department of Commerce, which has issued subpoenas to these Chinese-backed firms, has been completed for China Mobile and China Telecom based on risk analysis but is progressing slower for China Unicom. The probe, aiming to prevent Beijing from using Chinese companies to access US data and potentially harm companies, US citizens, or national security, is part of the ongoing technological rivalry between the US and China. Regulatory authorities have the power to investigate network services sold by foreign companies to the US and can block these companies from operating in US data centers or transmitting data for internet providers. These telecom companies have long been targeted by Washington, with the Federal Communications Commission denying China Mobile's phone service application in 2019 and revoking permits for China Telecom and China Unicom to provide phone services in the US in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
