Reuters: Concerns for Employee Safety Leading Some Foreign Companies to Arrange for Taiwanese Employees to Leave China

Reported about 1 year ago

Reuters reported that due to vague provisions regarding 'separatist activities' in China's recent statement on punishing those who split or incite subversion, some foreign-funded enterprises in China have been arranging for their Taiwanese employees to leave out of concern for their safety. As of 2022, an estimated 177,000 Taiwanese individuals work in China, with many employed by multinational corporations or Taiwanese businesses investing in China. Some companies have been discussing safety issues with employees, with some Taiwanese workers already accepting offers to leave China. This move by China is seen as potentially forcing foreign companies to completely withdraw Taiwanese staff from China, affecting business operations and potentially reducing the number of Taiwanese residents in China, making Beijing's efforts to win over Taiwanese sentiment more challenging.
