According to Reuters, Foxconn, a supplier for Apple, has been exposed for refusing to hire married women for iPhone assembly work at their plant in India. Following this disclosure, the Modi government has instructed the Tamil Nadu state, where the plant is located, to submit a detailed report. The Indian government cited the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976, which prohibits discrimination in hiring based on gender. Apple and Foxconn have not immediately responded to the Indian government's statement, while the Tamil Nadu government did not comment on the matter either. The investigation also revealed discriminatory hiring practices at the Foxconn iPhone factory near Chennai, where married women were allegedly excluded due to family responsibilities, pregnancy, and absenteeism, despite Apple's claims of following industry standards in recruitment.
