The Internal Administration Committee of the Legislative Yuan will review the draft amendments to the Public Officials Election and Recall Law next week to discuss the recall system. Legislator Hsu Yu-chen proposed the amendment and stated that the current low recall threshold has led to indirect encouragement of recall actions, even retaliatory operations, contrary to the spirit of democracy, affecting the stability of democratic institutions. Hsu also mentioned that the current recall system leads to frequent recall campaigns in various constituencies, disrupting governance and causing prolonged social unrest, posing a threat to national unity. Hsu suggests raising the threshold for recalled votes to be higher than the original election votes and adding a requirement of a year before a recall can be initiated, allowing elected officials time to govern effectively. With concerns about the negative impact of the current system on democracy, Hsu urges a rational assessment of the upcoming law revision.
