Top Australian miners Rio Tinto and BHP Group are collaborating to test large battery-operated electric haul truck technology in Western Australia's Pilbara region. They aim to achieve net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and will work with manufacturers Caterpillar and Komatsu for independent trials. The trials will evaluate performance and productivity in the Pilbara environment and mark the initial stage of electric haul truck testing at BHP and Rio's Pilbara operations, with trials for Cat 793 and Komatsu 930 haul trucks planned under the collaboration.
