Rio Tinto is in discussions with employees at the Oyu Tolgoi copper operations in Mongolia to prevent further industrial action due to a significant wage decrease that led to a previous strike in May. The company is aiming to produce 500,000 tons of copper annually from 2028 onwards, valued at around $5 billion a year. Workers are demanding wage parity with other Rio Tinto mines as their salaries have dropped by up to 80%, prompting a potential strike if demands are not met by July 5, 2024.
