Reported 8 months ago

In recent months, there have been reports of military personnel committing suicide both on and off base, prompting questions about the effectiveness and adequacy of psychological support within the military. The Ministry of National Defense reported to the Legislative Yuan that currently, there are 395 mental health professionals in the military, resulting in a ratio of approximately 1 mental health officer to 405 military personnel. This situation has sparked worries among lawmakers about the stress within the military and the need for better mental health care for soldiers. Calls have been made to increase resources and professional psychiatric assistance to address psychological issues. The Ministry of National Defense responded by explaining that the current establishment of mental health professionals aligns with guidelines set by expert consultations and the Taiwan Counseling Psychology Association, with a ratio of 1 professional to 500 individuals, indicating compliance with regulations for mental health support within the military.
