The Ministry of Health and Welfare recently revealed that intentional self-harm (suicide) ranked 11th as a cause of death in Taiwan in 2023, with suicide rates among 15-24 year-olds hitting a new high in recent years. Dr. Chen Yu-wen from Taipei Hospital's Department of Psychiatry warned that suicidal teens share 13 common characteristics and emphasized the importance of early intervention through medical assistance. Factors such as emotional distress, academic pressure, and bullying contribute to the complex reasons behind teenage suicides, underlining the need for tailored approaches to each case. By addressing issues like depression and anxiety, along with providing support and guidance, significant improvements can be seen in a relatively short period, as demonstrated by a case involving a 16-year-old boy who attempted suicide multiple times. Recognizing the risk factors and working together with professionals can lead troubled teens towards a brighter future.
