On June 30, 2024, around 9 a.m., a section of Road 8, 178 kilometers into the Central Cross-Island Highway, experienced a collapse with several huge boulders, including one estimated to weigh over 100 tons, blocking traffic. The authorities mobilized immediately for repairs and estimated the road to reopen by 5 p.m. Due to the incident, scheduled traffic control points and passing times in certain areas were adjusted, with warnings issued for drivers to exercise caution especially during post-earthquake and heavy rain periods when road conditions can be unpredictable.
