Rolls-Royce has been selected to provide technology for the new version of the US military aircraft known as the "Doomsday plane," part of the Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) project. This project aims to develop a successor to the current E-4B planes, which are capable of serving as a mobile command center during national emergencies and surviving nuclear blasts. Rolls-Royce's involvement will focus on the plane's propulsion systems, as part of a $13 billion contract awarded to Sierra Nevada Corporation for the Doomsday plane's development. The new aircraft, to be delivered in 2036, will replace the aging Boeing 747-200 jumbos currently in service.
