On July 13, 2024, the Russian naval frigate Gromkiy arrived at China's Zhanjiang port to participate in the 'Maritime Joint-2024' military drills with the Chinese navy in the South China Sea, highlighting their increasingly close cooperation under pressure from Western sanctions. At least three vessels from each side participated in three days of exercises, which included joint air defense and anti-submarine operations. This development follows a recent joint naval patrol and reflects the strengthened ties between China and Russia, as seen in their growing bilateral trade, which reached a record $240.1 billion in 2023.
