Russia and North Korea Strengthen Ties, Concerning Beijing

On June 19, 2024, Russian President Putin signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang. The agreement includes military assistance in case of armed aggression against either country, sparking concerns of upsetting Beijing. Despite the upgraded relationship and alliance-like declaration by Kim Jong-un, the limitations of their ties due to Chinese leader Xi Jinping are evident. The signing of the defense treaty with North Korea led Putin to conclude his Asian tour in Vietnam, where he praised the country's balanced stance on the Ukraine conflict.
