Russian Hacker Group Claims Control over Japanese Kadokawa Group System

Reported 9 months ago

The longstanding Japanese internet media website NicoNico, a branch of Kadokawa Group, has been experiencing system failures since the beginning of this month. Kadokawa Group, a major player in publishing Japanese culture such as manga, anime, and light novels, had its network and renowned video-sharing platform NicoNico completely paralyzed since the 8th. Reports initially suggested a ransomware attack on Kadokawa, which was denied by the group, but a Russian hacker group on the dark web now claims to have kidnapped Kadokawa's network system and threatens to release confidential company data if a ransom is not paid by July 1st. This includes services like NicoNico, Dwango gaming entertainment site, Kadokawa's main website, and more, with sensitive data already downloaded by the hackers. Kadokawa has struggled to restore services, raising concerns over possible data loss including nearly 20 years of accumulated online cultural heritage.
