On June 19, 2024, at 12:48 AM, the plane of Russian President Putin arrived in Pyongyang at 3:00 AM. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally greeted Putin on the tarmac, marking their first meeting since September 2023 in Russia. This visit, the first to North Korea for Putin since 2000, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. The two leaders engaged in discussions to deepen ties and were expected to sign a treaty that could bolster their partnership amid common challenges such as sanctions and a desire for a multipolar world order. The visit's main agenda on the following day included photo sessions, a 90-minute meeting, and a tea party. The US and South Korea accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia in exchange for food, although both Kremlin and Pyongyang denied such weapon trades but vowed to enhance military cooperation since last year. The US Defense Department spokesperson expressed concerns over the deepening cooperation between Russia and North Korea, especially regarding peacekeeping on the Korean Peninsula, support for Ukraine against Russian aggression, and potential implications of their shared animosity toward the West as well as Moscow's arms demand for the Ukraine conflict. After concluding his visit to North Korea, Putin was scheduled to travel to Hanoi, Vietnam, exhibiting Vietnam's firm support for Russia under Communist rule, possibly escalating tension with the US.
