On June 24, 2024, the former director of the Central Weather Bureau, Zheng Mingdian, shared five safety guidelines for thunderstorm areas. As thunderstorms become frequent, it is advised to crouch down immediately if you notice your hair standing on end outdoors, covering your head with both hands to minimize danger. Indoors are generally safe, but caution should be taken around telephone lines and windows, and it is recommended to avoid showering during thunderstorms. Additional safety tips include seeking shelter near buildings or low-lying areas outdoors, avoiding water bodies and conductive objects, disembarking from boats or stopping swimming in thunderstorm areas, and carefully driving during heavy rain by slowing down, turning on hazard lights, and avoiding contact with metal components inside the vehicle. Lastly, camping in a tent does not offer adequate protection against lightning strikes according to Zheng Mingdian.
