On June 7, the largest union under South Korea's Samsung Electronics initiated a nationwide strike by collectively taking annual leave to protest salary issues. Despite ongoing negotiations with the higher management since January resulting in a unilateral decision to increase salaries by 5.1%, the union was dissatisfied and sought higher bonuses and an additional day of annual leave. This marks Samsung Electronics' first nationwide strike by its labor force since its establishment in 1969, a rare occurrence in South Korea's high-pressure work culture, possibly influenced by the global competition in artificial intelligence and the company's advancements in high-end chip technology. The strike lasted only one day, utilizing the holiday and weekend to create a four-day break without impacting operations. Samsung Electronics expressed intentions to continue negotiations with the union without production disruptions.
