Sandra Oudkirk urges against using Taiwan as an excuse for conflict amid Chinese military exercises following Lai Ching-te's inauguration

Reported 7 months ago

Since President Lai Ching-te took office, China has conducted 'Joint Sword' military exercises, with disruptive activities in the gray zone. Sandra Oudkirk, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), warned China not to use Taiwan's democratic activities like presidential elections and inaugurations as a pretext for escalating regional tensions and conflicts. The U.S. remains committed to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, urging China to cease coercive and provocative actions in the region. Oudkirk emphasized the importance of upholding the status quo and peace in cross-strait relations, cautioning against risky activities that could lead to miscalculations and larger conflicts.
