Since President Lai Ching-te took office, China has conducted 'Joint Sword' military exercises, with disruptive activities in the gray zone. Sandra Oudkirk, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), warned China not to use Taiwan's democratic activities like presidential elections and inaugurations as a pretext for escalating regional tensions and conflicts.
