Scholz Coalition Defeated as Populists Gain Ground in Germany

Reported about 1 month ago

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's ruling coalition faced significant losses in recent regional elections in eastern Germany, with populist parties on both the extreme right and left capturing over 60% of the vote in Thuringia and nearly half in Saxony. The far-right Alternative for Germany party achieved a historic win in Thuringia, marking the first such success for a far-right group in a German state election since World War II. Scholz’s coalition, consisting of the Social Democrats, Greens, and Free Democrats, garnered less than 15% combined, prompting speculation about potential early national elections and the future leadership of the SPD.
