Retired journalist and senior photographer Lai Chengmao passed away early in the morning on May 29, at the age of 94. The family sorrowfully announced the news, with a farewell ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. the following day at Chiayi City Funeral Parlor. Lai, who started photographing at the age of 16, captured numerous photos and videos in his lifetime. Known for his documentation of the 1964 Baihe earthquake, Lai's valuable images depicted the local devastation. Having worked as a photographer for Taiwan Provincial Film Studios and CTV, Lai highlighted the culture and people of Chiayi through his lens. Mayor of Chiayi City, Huang Minhui, commemorated Lai's achievements through various awards won for his photographic works over the years, emphasizing the importance of his legacy for understanding the history of Chiayi. Huang expressed deep emotions, describing Lai's close ties to Chiayi and his dedication to photography for over 70 years as exemplary for young image workers.
