On July 2, 2024, China's summer transportation officially kicked off with a total estimated passenger count of 860 million expected to travel by train over the summer. Shanghai's railway system alone transported 408,000 passengers in a single day, with a focus on family travel. However, extreme weather conditions caused sandstorms in Dunhuang, Gansu, leading to some tourists experiencing sandstorms while traveling and others being stranded due to flash floods in Xinjiang. Despite the hot weather, many travelers still enjoyed desert destinations. Various emergency measures were implemented to handle the high tourist flow and extreme temperatures in Dunhuang.
