Major shipping companies, including Hapag-Lloyd AG and Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, are urging the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to avoid endorsing crop-based biofuels in their decarbonization efforts. They argue that without strict regulations, these biofuels could ironically exacerbate climate issues, as palm and soy are more harmful than traditional fuels when considering deforestation and land use. As discussions on new regulations are set to take place in London, these companies and various conservation groups are advocating against any economic incentives for biofuels within the shipping industry.
